She packs when she can fit in her backpack and heads off for the nearest town. Her friends are nothing but piles of ash but Taya appears to be none the worse off. Taya is out camping with her girlfriends when the Blue Wave hits, killing everyone she loves in an instant. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair. So in conclusion I really enjoyed my first book by this author and I'm struggling to rate it but as the ending did feel a little too rushed and trite I will go with four but honestly it's well worth your time. The end and epilogue to my mind felt a little too quick but I guess it's left in such a way that if the author ever decided to revisit these characters she could. Something was pretty obvious and the ending confirmed it but actually I didn't mind because I was thoroughly enjoying guessing what would happen next. Taya is pretty awesome although I did find her change from normal everyday young woman to bloodthirsty assassin a little odd. There is romance but it's a slow build up which works well although as a reader I could see it coming. If I had to categorise this book it's probably fantasy but done in a very unique way. Well let me state here and now that I was totally wrong as our very accomplished heroine Taya stepped into a world that felt both magical and medieval. I looked at the cover and expected urban fantasy then I started it and thought oh it's going to be dystopian. Taya is pre Well this book totally blindsided me.
This may be the best stand alone novel in a long time for me.more Highly recommend, started out as dystopian and evolved into a bit of fantasy and a touch of the Andre Norton "Witch World" for me.
#KUNG FU FIGHTER STATUSES SERIES#
McKenzie has written several like this, its like she writes books that could easily be turned into a series but she has only 1 series she writes, almost all of her stand alone novels could be turned into a series with ease but this was a great read. I have gotten so used to series it was great to have an amazing stand alone that was not part of a series. I have to say that the ending felt a wee bit rushed but very satisfying.Īfter a shocking start to this story that looked like it was going to be a dystopian novel (which I kinda dislike) it slowly evolves into something else, we have a big evil secret, easy to hate bad guys, and the shining knight, throw in a bit of romance and so whats not to love. Taya and Thane were an unlikely couple and to be honest the romance while a big part of the plot was not the overwhelming force here, a lot of sword and sorcery theme. After a shocking start to this story that looked like it was going to be a dystopian I don't give many 5 Star review but this came close since anytime when I was not reading it I was wondering what was going to happen next and could not wait to get back to it.
